Dr. M. A. Rashid was the omnipotent scholar of Bangladesh whose vision, leadership, strict regulations, leadership and great efforts made it possible to establish Bangladesh University of Engineering And Technology (BUET) to its glorious and prime position. Having achieved D.Sc. degree in civil engineering from the Carnegie Institute Of Technology USA, he became the Principal of Ahsanullah Engineering College in 1954. His strenuous efforts as a Vice Chancellor led the East Pakistan Engineering University (the present BUET) during 1962-1970. His glorious endeavors for BUET are honored by establishment of the largest students’ residential hall after his name.

1919, 16th January : Born in Bogadubi, Hobigonj ; Sylhet
1936 : Metric passed from Hobigonj High School, Sylhet
1938 : I. Sc passed from Sylhet Murari Chad College, in the following year admitted to Shibpur Bengal Engineering College
1941 : Married to Mossamat Tajunnessa Khatun
1941 : As a third year civil engineering student got Slater Memorial Gold medal and Test Memorial medal
1942 : Passed B.E as a civil engineer. Got Trevor Memorial prize and medal
1942-45 : Worked under Assam Government in Public Works department as an assistant engineer
1945 : Going abroad for higher studies
1947, February : Had M. Sc. Degree in Civil engineering from Carnegie Mellon University of Technology, USA
1948, 27th June : Got D. Sc. Degree in Civil engineering from Carnegie Mellon University of Technology, USA
1948 : Joined Dhaka Engineering College as an Assistant Professor
1952 : Promoted to Professor post
1954-60 : Principal of Ahsanullah Engineering College
1959 : Member of the National Education Commission, Pakistan
1961 : Joined as a Director of Technical Education of West Pakistan
1962-70 : Became the Vice Chancellor of East Pakistan Engineering University
1966-78 : Member of the Asian Institute of Technology Trust Board, Thailand
1966 : Honored with Sitara-A-Pakistan medal
1968 : Member of Human Resource and Education Commission of Pakistan
1970-71 : Chairman of East Pakistan Public Service
1970 : Member of the National Exam Commission
1971 : Member of the National Science and Technology Commission
1972 : Member of the National Salary Commission of Bangladesh
1973 : Member of the National Salary Commission of Bangladesh for the labors of Industries
1975-78 : Member of the Advisory Board for the President of Bangladesh Government
1979-till death : Professor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology
1981 : Chairman, Board of Directors, Janata Bank
1981, 28th October : Severely injured from road accident in Pabna - Bogra highway, admitted to Dhaka P.G. hospital
1981, 6th November : Died in the afternoon
He was also elected as the Fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers. Before death he was elected as the Chairman of Commonwealth Foundation. From July 1982 he had been being start his duty as the Chairman.
